VoIP - coming to a phone near you?

Did you know you can make voice calls over the internet, and that the rates for long-distance and international calls are a fraction of normal telecommunications traffic charges?

Because the internet protocol is a much more efficient way to transmit data than a traditional landline, the cost to the networks is much lower, and they can pass this on to the consumer in the form of lower rates.

On the domestic scene, many Australian VoIP providers are offering untimed long-distance calls between capital cities. For example, many providers offer untimed calls between Sydney and Melbourne for a fixed cost of around 10 cents.
